Sorry I can't help with the practical question but... I saw Arcade Fire at Big Day Out (my first experience with AF) and they were magic! Bjork cancelled, however... sucked but couldn't be helped.
Ok. That was pointless. I just have the constant urge to spout mostly irrelevant praise about Arcade Fire.

myself, a minidisc, and then something like soundforge. not very classy but cheap. i keep spending on new instruments vs recording gear.

a laptop is great for recording though, just for the convenience of being able to drag it around, and make quick changes to things as needed.
